Facts of Interest: Snowy owls inhabit the farthest stretches of the Arctic, but some years they have been spotted as far south as Georgia. They are elegant hunters. They are able to “snow plunge” at least 7 inches under the snow to catch prey, and their large wings and fringed feathers allow them to glide in total silence. They hunt tundra-dwelling lemmings and typically nest on the ground of the tundra.
